Lookout Rental Update (1/2007)
“”Oak Flat Suffers Storm Damage”
During the Winter of 2005/2006, Oak Flat Lookout, a recreation rental fire lookout in the Sequoia National Forest, sustained wind damage which blew out all of the windows. Subsequent storms brought rain which then ruined the floors. This must have been a wind event to end all wind events, because the cab actually lifted off of the tower and moved several inches. Vandalism caused by unknown perpetrators and an infestation of earwigs added to the devastation.
“Oak Flat is near and dear to the hearts of the Kern River Ranger District,” said Margie Clack, District Public Information Officer. Indeed, under the guidance of Battalion Chief Jim Bauer, the district buckled down and went to work. Contractor John Porter and Forest Environmental Engineers Larry Trueblood and Barry Clark replaced the windows and the floor and bug-bombed the building. Patrol Angela Yearwood along with the Fulton Hot Shot crew were instrumental in repairing the washed-out, brush-choked road as well as moving the gate, which had been damaged in the storm.
Funding for the rehab was obtained using proceeds collected through the recreation rental program. The lookout still needs painting and minor maintenance to bring it back up to standards, but the district expects Oak Flat to be open for rental again by Summer 2007.
