The Buck Rock Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the tradition of fire lookouts and other historic facilities.  Founders were motivated to form this association because of mutual concern over the neglect, abandonment and destruction of many historic fire lookouts.  These include local facilities such as Bear Mountain Lookout, Delilah Lookout and Buck Rock Lookout.

   The current goals and objectives of the Foundation include restoration projects of fire lookouts and other historic facilities in accordance with historical standards and guidelines.  We believe that the best use for fire lookouts is the traditional one of staffing the facilities for fire detection.  Not only does this provide a valuable service to foothill communities and the Forest, but it also serves visitors with the unique opportunity for interpretation of the natural and cultural history of fire detection and the surrounding environment. 

   To ensure that fire lookouts are saved, the Foundation is also exploring the multi-use potential of these historic buildings.  Using lookouts and other related facilities as museums or centers for public education, as recreation rentals, or as outposts for wildlife observation and research may be the key to obtaining funds necessary for preservation project work.

   To achieve the goal of saving fire lookouts and other historic facilities, much of the Foundation’s energies will be in the pursuit of generating funds.    We will be seeking grants from private and government sources as well as individual and corporate donors.    The Foundation has developed a volunteer program to engage community involvement and to provide logistical support for the achievement of the goals of the Foundation.  We hope to involve local folks to staff the facilities, help with restoration and maintenance projects and to collect historic information and photographs in an effort to promote the education and preservation of our conservation heritage.....read more->

Because of its historical significance, Buck Rock Lookout was accepted to the National Historic Lookout Register in October of 1988.
